Superbase Ultraball is a ludicrously unpredictable and violent party Baseball game for 2 players. It is an unconstrained and even more beautiful form of the game we know now.
It requires, at best, a light understanding of Baseball rules, and is meant to be non-competitive and fun driven.
(Superbase Ultraball is currently in development!)
In the post-capitalist pre-apocalypse near-extinction superfuture, there is no more advertising, and as such, there are no more soulless corporate exploitations of athleticism. The sports industry as we know it is long dead.
Despite this, the spirit of baseball lived on, and lived on so hard, that a new form of the sport emerged organically within the region historians refer to as the Ballmuda Triangle; its points are Jacksonville in Florida, Mixco in Guatemala, and Port Of Spain in Trinidad & Tobago.
Empty stadiums were taken over by the people, rules and culture solidified, and then the rest of the world got involved. Guilds formed in the major regions with their own subcultures, strengths, and styles.
Mexico, Central America, and South America. The Mesolands are the lands of Speed.
Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the greater Caribbean. The IBC is a backyard and streetball culture, and as such, its Ultraballers tends to favor Fielding.
United States and Canada. Ultraballers from the Big A tend to favor Hitting, and as such, tend to excel at and love combat.
Japan and Korea. TEC Ultraballers tend to be skilled arms - many of the best pitchers hail from the True East and favor Throwing.
All extraplanetary players. TCC Ultrballers come from Space Stations, the Cosma, and even other planes. It is a guild of Wildcards.
Before any game can be played, 24 Ultraballers must end up at the same place at the same time - 12 that have banded together and successfully taken over a stadium, and 12 who have showed up at the gates to take the stadium and make it theirs.
The Athletes of the Superbase Ultraball world are known as Ultraballers, and they live, breathe, and eat the game. While they tend to grow up and learn inside one of the major regional guilds, their fate is to roam the earth, hunting and foraging both alone and in groups, wishing only to get absorbed into any spontaneous game at any time in any place in any circumstances.
The goal of any Ultraballer is to sustain themselves long enough to achieve the ultimate glory - legendhood so profound the Baseball God removes them from the Cycle Of Life And Death and places them into the Forever Loop so that they may exist in their legendary athlete forms for all of eternity. As such, some Ultraballers are their original selves, born this generation, seeking legendhood. But some are immortals of the sport, long ago preserved by the Baseball God and frozen in their peak Ultrastate.
All Ultraballers are slowly drawn to the Ballmuda Triangle, get pulled in, then migrate through its circuit of diverse and incredible stadiums as immortals or until they can't physically play anymore.
Event Cards are the ludicrously unpredictable part of Superbase Ultraball. They represent everything from the illicit tech that has been absorbed into the game, to acts of divine intervention from both The Baseball God and Chaos Herself.
Each players start every half-inning with a small hand of these, but more can be acquired during play in a variety of ways. They can be moved, sold, and even nullified.
During the game, they may be played when their respective trigger has been satisfied, and they cost nothing but are discarded! These Events can and will completely turn the game on its head, and it's on the player to manage and use these well!
Superbase Ultraball is a sport free from the corrosive advertiser and league interests of the Live Ball era, but it still needs to be cast to the enthusiastically hungry masses. A variety of independent broadcasting companies, ranging from passionate, nomadic individuals with a USB microphone to coverage groups with small casting cells all around the world, make sure the anyone in the world is able to see and hear every game possible.
Because of the transient and punk nature of Superbase Ultraball, every last broadcaster is ready to get into a vehicle on a moment's notice when a game is spontaneously forming within the region they're currently in.
All broadcasters are a force of personality that confer unique benefits to the team they're covering. The way they uniquely excite their audience intervenes in fate and transforms time and space to mirror the audience's emotions and desires.
Baseball fields sit all around the world - some are decrepit relics from the Live Ball Era, co-opted by Ultraballers and their Guilds, some are constructed independently by communities and cities to bring the sport to their home, and some are sparkling new facilities built by wealthy donors and organizations for love of the game.
Each field is ultimately its own character, turning any game played within its walls into a unique and unreplicable event.
My name is Ben Ruiz and I'm a professional videogame designer. I've been in the videogame industry since 2004 and have worked on over 20 shipped titles.
I've been independently developing Superbase Ultraball in my moonlight hours since late 2022, and I'm very excited to eventually bring it into the physical game space.
